Given so much to see and do in Singapore, you will be reluctant to leave. But, as a bonus, why not take a trip to one of the many exciting destinations nearby? From Singapore, it couldn’t be easier.

Singapore offers endless possibilities for great sojourns to experience the different facets of South-East Asia, especially the ASEAN countries and China, close enough to be experienced within the framework of a short plane journey. With hideaway resorts, pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters, these destinations have become perfect getaways for the golfing fanatics, the work-weary or those seeking solace away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Malaysia

Comprising Peninsular Malaysia and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, the country has a lot to offer – from sun-kissed beaches and cool hill resorts to a vibrant city life.

Johor Bahru, Singapore’s immediate northern neighbour, is a city that still retains the laidback feel of a kampung (Malay village), with eating (seafood especially) and shopping being the biggest attractions. Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, one of the region’s growing financial hubs, has a legion of world-class wining, dining and entertainment spots. Shop and dine at Jalan Bukit Bintang, party at Bangsar, and make time to admire the city from Petronas Twin Towers, the world’s tallest building.

Nestled in the warm waters of the Andaman Sea lies the island of Langkawi, still relatively remote and unspoiled. The island beckons visitors with its many legends and unassuming “kampong” way of life. Its stunning views of mountains swathed in clouds and sleepy fishing villages offer perfect solitude to those seeking respite from the concrete jungles of civilisation. Marine enthusiasts can find some great snorkelling and coral diving.

Indonesia

The world’s largest archipelago stretches from Sumatra in the west to Papua New Guinea in the east. The chain of 17,000 islands span over 5,000km and most famous of all is Bali. Bali, the crown jewel in the treasure chest of Indonesia, is a masterpiece of nature. Turning natural blessings into a tourist draw has resulted in Bali being often referred to as “paradise on earth”. Tiny Ubud stirs the artist in all of us, while Kuta Beach on South Bali’s western shore serves up a perpetual beach party for surfers.

The Indonesian island of Bintan lies just 45km south-east of Singapore. Bintan’s deep waters off the northern coast provide excellent opportunities for offshore and coastal sports. With its rugged terrain and diverse flora and fauna, Bintan also presents a host of activities for nature-lovers. East of Batam lies Bintan, only 45 minutes away from Singapore via ferry.

The Philippines

This island nation offers diverse urban and natural experiences. The capital, Manila, is cosmopolitan and alive with memorable nightlife, dining and entertainment. The island of Cebu continues to grow as both a business and leisure hub. The beaches are a mecca for sun worshippers and there’s a variety of sights to keep visitors interested.

Thailand

The unique charm of Thailand is nearby too. Thread your way through Bangkok’s teeming klongs, climb its temple steps and look out over the busy river. Visit the floating market, the Grand Palace and watch classic Thai dances. Travel back in time on a train to Chiang Mai in the north and watch the elephants at work.

Known as the Pearl of the South, Phuket beckons with its sheer natural beauty. Tall mountainous cliffs, picturesque coasts, white sandy beaches and azure waters are a magnet drawing sun-worshippers from afar. Divers will not be disappointed with the coral reefs off the Similan Islands, a few hours by boar north-west of Phuket. These places, easily within reach from the conveniently located and well connected Lion City Singapore, are limited only by the amount of time you have
